Welcome to Places of Worship Canada

A Community Website

It is the aim of this website to collect and display a catalogue of places-of-worship (past and present) across Canada. Places of worship include churches, temples, mosques, synagogues and other places for religious congregations. This catalogue will attempt to provide historical context for these sites and provide a tool for historic research for future generations to look back at.

We will rely on the community at large to advise us of omissions to the database, to contribute photographs, memorabilia, locations/addresses, historical information, relevant stories about the communities, congregations, and any other notes of interest. Unless otherwise directed, all submissions will be credited to the submitter. Please find the instructions for contributing materials in the “Contact Us” area of the menu.

So Far……

To this point, we have nearly 5000 images collected for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador (incomplete). The work for the latter is not yet complete, and we are certain that there are worship buildings and locations missing from the three other provinces. In 2022 photography was begun in the province of Quebec. We have processed and uploaded all of Prince Edward Island and much of New Brunswick (to be completed before the close of 2024). Work will continue on the preparation and uploading of the listings from other provinces to this website in 2025.

At a certain point, we will open up for the submission of listings, photographs and other materials from other provinces/regions

Support

We will be providing a sales program in the future for those who may wish to purchase copies of any of the photos in these listings. We have a GoFundMe page available for those who wish to contribute to the cost and expenses of operating and further development of the website. Up to this point, the costs of collection of data, photographing the sites and all other expenses have been personally funded! Hallowed Timbers Photography operates with only 3 volunteer staff who search out sites to photograph, travel to each site to photograph, research any material about the history of each site, prepare each location and corresponding photos and then upload each to the website. Please visit the GoFundme link on the Fund Raising tab below.

Current Presentation & Photo Specifications

IIn this initial launch of the site, we are displaying all of the sites we found for Prince Edward Island and will complete those for New Brunswick by the end 2024. In 2024, we did add listings and photos for Inuvik, North West Territories as well.

In 2025, we will be adding all of the locations we have visited in Newfoundland and Labrador. We will try to add additional worship sites and photos every few weeks. When Nova Scotia was photographed, it was done with a 35mm film camera. There are almost 1800 locations there and each photo will have to be digitized before we can load those. Both Newfoundland and Nova Scotia have a few rough samples posted to illustrate those areas.

When we are preparing the photos for the website, each photo is cropped, then Photo ID and Date are applied, followed by Copyright, and finally it is re-sized to specifications required by the software. As these are to become an historical record, we do not do any further editing (such as removing power lines, fire hydrants, other signage) as an historical record should show what the site looked like when the picture was taken.
